African American Experience Research Day

McKeldin 6137 Special Events Room
Friday, October 28, 2016 - 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM

The University Administration is considering the development of a campus-wide initiative on the African-American experience. We are writing to invite you to participate in an information gathering event that will be key to whether and how we go forward with this idea. The event is a Research Day whose goal is to develop a compendium of the UMD scholarly activities /projects on African Americans, Prince Georges County and or Baltimore city. If you are intrigued by this possibility and would like to be involved by sharing information about your work, the event is planned for Friday, October 28, 2016 from 9 a.m. -1:30p.m. in McKeldin 6137 Special Events Room with lunch and small group discussion to follow.

Two-minute/One-frame (1:1) Presentations:

Each participant will be asked to prepare talking points – lasting no longer than two minutes - and one PowerPoint slide on their research and/or scholarly interests on the African American experience. This will help the planning committee to identify current strengths and possible themes around which the initiative might be organized.

Through a combination of words and pictures participants should hone down their projects and/or research into a succinct two-minute talk that describes their work. The accompanying PowerPoint slide should be to some degree self-explanatory and include your contact information. Each presenter will be assigned a two-minute time-slot during the event. Participants will have an opportunity to follow up with questions and network during lunch and the break-out session.

A single PowerPoint slide must be uploaded in advance of the event, no later than Wednesday, October 26th at noon. Please make sure your name is on your slide and in the file name.

If you are unable to attend the event, you are welcome to still submit a PowerPoint slide and paragraph describing your work to aaexperiencecommittee@gmail.com so we can have as complete a census as possible.

Graduate Students:
Limited space is available to graduate students to present, subject to review. If you are intrigued by this possibility and would like to be involved by sharing information about your work please Register Here and Upload PowerPoint Slide for review, no later than Wednesday, October 26th at noon. Please make sure your name is on your slide and in the file name. We will contact those invited to present at this Research Day the following Thursday.
