Home Stories Fundraiser

Nandos Peri Peri, College Park MD
Tuesday, February 28, 2017 - 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM

What is Home Stories? Home Stories is a digital storytelling project that brings University of Maryland (UMD) undergraduates together with recent immigrant youth to reflect upon and produce digital stories of home. A key question guiding this project: What do 'home' and 'sanctuary' mean to you? '

Why Home Stories? A growing number of immigrant youth have sought homes, sanctuary, and reunion with families and friends in the long-standing Mexican and Central American communities near UMD. As they work to adapt to their new home—often with deep memories and nostalgia for what they have left behind—this project creates an opportunity for these newcomers to reflect upon and share their experiences. Through Home Stories, UMD students collaborate with immigrant youth from local middle and high schools to write and produce their stories as multimedia narratives that can be shared with their families and communities and made available on a project website. This model, which will also be adapted for use with other immigrant groups, promotes self-reflection, critical thinking, and helps newcomers to develop language and technical skills necessary for their resettlement and growth.

Home Stories is led by Ana Patricia Rodríguez, Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and U.S. Latina/o Studies and Sheri L. Parks, Director of the UMD College of Arts and Humanities Center for Synergy. Support Home Stories We are excited to partner with Nando's Peri-Peri to support this critical work.

You can support Home Stories by presenting this flyer at Nando's College Park on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Nando's will donate 40% of their fundraiser sales to this project. Every dollar raised will be matched by a grant through the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). This is an important and timely project, rarely funded at this level, and we need your help to raise $50,000 by May 1, 2017 to secure the first year of NEH's award. Please consider contributing further and sharing our online donation page listed below. Be sure to mark all gifts: Arts and Humanities Center for Synergy - HOME STORIES PROJECT.
