It can seem sometimes that there is no piano until the masterful South African jazz composer and pianist Abdullah Ibrahim sits down to play. In a rare and not-to-be missed solo performance at The Clarice of his own compositions, Ibrahim’s gift is pure artistry shorn of theatrics. Gorgeous, boundless and inventive, his music is dense and subtle yet intensely expressive in a way that reveals the power of jazz to move us deeply.
